Standardisation Plans

COAST aims to actively impact the following standardisation activities:

Efficient Network Delivery

In IETF there are a number of active groups: BEHAVE and P2PSIP are already working on improved routing for P2P traffic, PPSP P2P Streaming Protocol will focus on the media delivery aspects via P2P overlay architectures, IETF ALTO (Application-Layer Traffic Optimization) is working on improved traffic routing for P2P. COAST plans to actively contribute and impact this standardisation effort.

In  DVB, the Commercial Module of the IPTV Group (CM-IPTV) group is working on commercial requirements for P2P Open Internet Content Delivery (P2P-OICD) assisted by end customer’s IPTV boxes. COAST will monitor and try to contribute to this activity, by offering specifications, technologies, testbed validation results, etc.

The IETF Multiparty Multimedia Session Control (MMUSIC) Group has completed a specification for the signalling of media decoding dependency in SDP. Similar signalling will be required for the relation between views and associated depth maps and related standardisation activities will be initiated by the COAST project when indicated. .

3D & FVV coding and storage

MPEG has been working on several standards related to 3D content. Depth map or disparity information can be encoded as auxiliary data according to MPEG-C Part 3 (ISO/IEC 23002-3 Auxiliary Video Data Representations), while new values for additional data representations can be easily added to fulfil future demands. The COAST will contribute with novel content formats or services using depth information.

Multiple views of the same scene can be efficiently stored or transmitted to the user using Multiview Video Coding (MVC, ISO/IEC 14496-10:2008 Amendment 1). The use of multiple views is also common element of 3D video (3DV) and free viewpoint video (FVV) systems, which are new types of visual media that expand the user’s experience. Minor upgrades of MVC can be envisioned in the scope of COAST, but major impact is anticipated for the emerging 3D Video Coding activity which is the most recent and ongoing MPEG activity.

The IETF Audio Video Transport (AVT) Group has completed their RTP payload format specification for H.264/MPEG4-SVC to which the COAST partner HHI has significantly contributed as co-author. For MVC video, some efforts will be necessary to ensure that RTP transport for MVC provides similar capabilities as for SVC and enough flexibility for making the most of the multiview features.
